Congratulations to Pete Sherrard, winner of the Open Sculpture Competition
The Art at the Edge Sculpture Competition
The winner of the competition to find the 30th sculpture to complete Art at the Edge’s commissioned bronze collection Sculpture and Sport a Celebration for 2012 was awarded with his prize at the Paralympic Simulation Camp 2011.
The competition set the challenge of creating a sculptural interpretation of a Paralympic sport. Over 50 entrants from across the UK applied and have produced a wonderfully diverse range of interpretations of Paralympic sport.
The judging of the competition took place during the camp by an independent panel of guest judges, including representatives from Paralympics GB, the Youth Sport Trust and our commissioned sculptors.
It was a hard decision but the judges felt Pete Sherrard’s entry, representing wheelchair athletics, was well executed and successfully conveyed the power and determination behind Paralympic sport.
Pete’s inspiration for his entry came whilst watching wheelchair athletes at the recent London Marathon. He was impressed by how power, precision and speed result form a perfect union between ‘man and machine’. In his sculpture the athlete is blending, almost organically with the wheelchair.
Pete comments about his work, “I am interested in body language and specifically the subtle ways our bodies change according to our emotional or mental states. I am exploring the way our bodies can speak, what we fail to express when using words. By blending the human figure with aesthetically driven, natural forms I hope to create sculptures that are not based on a defined, single statement but an ambiguous and complex set of emotions that hopefully we can relate to, recognize and accept or confront.”
Tim Hollingsworth, CEO of ParalympicsGB officially announced Pete Sherrard as the winner and presented him with a cheque for £1000 at the Simulation Camp on the 25th August.
The winning piece will be cast in bronze at the prestigious Pangolin foundry and form the 30th sculpture in Art at the Edge’s commissioned collection. The collection will be exhibited in a number of locations around the UK in 2012 including the Victoria Art Gallery Bath, the Ashmolean Museum Oxford and the Oxo Tower Gallery London.
Net profits from the sale of sculptures in our exhibitions go to our beneficiaries, ParalympicsGB and the Youth Sport Trust, to support disabled and disadvantaged young people.

Live carving of the OLYMPIAN, Mark Foster
Olympian
Live sculpture carving of Mark Foster’s torso at The Old Petrol Station Workshop (behind the Royal Crescent in Crescent Lane, opposite the Marlborough Tavern). Open to the public every weekday from 12-5pm through out the summer.
Local sculptor, Ben Dearnley is currently doing a live carving of the Olympic swimmer, Mark Foster’s torso out of a 2.69 tonne block of Bath stone. Ben began work on the carving in April 2011 and has since made impressive progress. The sculpture has now reached an exciting stage where the torso is clearly defined within the stone. Mark Foster recently visited the workshop to witness the progress, he commented, “It looks really good, I love all Ben’s work”.
The completed piece will form part of Art at the Edge’s Sculpture Trail. In the Spring of 2012 the sculpture will be permanently located in Southgate Street highlighting the talent of local artists and our University’s success in nuturing and supporting sporting excellence.
